Yes, there is an evolutionary reason for the fear of heights, also known as acrophobia. The fear of heights develops in every human being, starting in infancy around the time of crawling. So the fear of heights that develops with crawling is protective for the baby, as the baby will be less likely to crawl over a steep edge, like the edge of a bed or steps.
