Hypervigilance is a symptom of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Hypervigilance is a hyperarousal state where you are on-guard and constantly scanning your environment for any signs of danger. You spend much of your time in this increased arousal state and it affects your life negatively, as you deplete your energy, your sleep becomes disrupted, you are startled at every sudden and loud noises, you are jumpy, you become suspicious, your job/school performance suffers, and your relationships suffer.
