When it works, the best medication for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is Buspar (buspirone). Buspar is usually well-tolerated and has minimal side effects. However, Buspar appears to be less effective than SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) for generalized anxiety disorder. But the problem with SSRIs and SNRIs is that they are associated with more side effects than Buspar.

So if Buspar is effective, then it is the best medication for GAD, given it is well-tolerated with minimal side effects.
