What medical problems can cause anxiety?

Several medical problems can cause anxiety (Carandang, 2014), which include the following:

 

  • Endocrine disorders
    • Endocrine disorders which may induce anxiety include hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, hypoglycemia, and hyperadrenocorticism.
  • Cardiovascular disorders
    • Cardiovascular disorders which may induce anxiety include congestive heart failure, pulmonary embolism, and arrhythmia.
  • Respiratory disorders
    • Respiratory disorders which may induce anxiety include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and hyperventilation.
  • Metabolic disorders 
    • Metabolic disorders which may induce anxiety include vitamin B12 deficiency and porphyria.
  • Neurological disorders
    • Neurological disorders which may induce anxiety include neoplasms, vestibular dysfunction, and encephalitis.
