After you are exposed to a life-threatening event, the chances of getting PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) is 9.7%. In other words, 1 in 10 people exposed to trauma will get PTSD (Carandang, 2014).

Assault is associated with the highest risk of developing PTSD, where 20.9% develop PTSD after this trauma. The sudden, unexpected death of a loved one has a moderate risk of developing PTSD, where 14.3% develop PTSD after this trauma. And the sudden unexpected death of a loved one is the trauma most often reported in people with PTSD, accounting for 31% of all PTSD cases (Carandang, 2014).
