Depression does not necessarily cause social phobia (social anxiety disorder), but depression and social phobia can co-occur together. Having depression can make social phobia worse, as depression can make you isolate yourself socially. And with social phobia, there is already an avoidance of social events due to the fear of social scrutiny.
