Hi. It’s Jenny at AnxietyBoss.com. Our question today is from Amy in San Carlos, California. The idea of infinity scares me beyond belief. Is this normal?
The fear of infinity is called apeirophobia. In short, the fear of affinity is the anxiety that’s experienced when coming to terms with the possibility of endlessness. Whether this fear pertains to a never-ending existence, an endless universe, or even a bottomless pit, this feeling stems from the anxiety over what ifs or the belief that one is insignificant.
This fear may also stem from the fear of the unknown which may also be linked to the fear of death. People with apeirophobia often find that the concept of space and the study of astronomy cause an intense fear of even a panic attack.
Other symptoms of apeirophobia may be a constant feeling of inevitable doom or a feeling of disconnection from reality; moreover, this fear may be due to personal life conflictions such as feelings of lack of control and lack of self-trust.
However, if this fear becomes so intense that it begins to interfere with your day-to-day activities, then you may find that speaking to a doctor will serve as very helpful in overcoming your phobia.
Hello,
The fear of the concept of infinity is common regarding a specific form of infinity.
The process of evolution starts simply with self replicating molecules, and eventually a complicated thing like a human arises. But we are still driven to continue the process of evolution through reproduction and personal advancement. The advancement which we all evolutionarily chase is where the fear in many people comes from.
If we do not associate the concept of infinity which we all evolutionarily chase with a positive emotion, anxiety and existential fear can occur. Thankfully we are granted the profound emotion of love when we reproduce and continue to chase advancement.
Much love
∞
Thank you for your interesting perspective on infinity, evolution, and anxiety.
